On 5 February 2021, you submitted a complaint to the European Ombudsman concerning the European Commission’s reply to your email about how to renounce Moroccan citizenship. In its reply to you, the Commission said that it is the sovereign right of third countries to decide on their naturalisation procedures. It also informed you about the provisions of Moroccan legislation governing the procedure for renouncing Moroccan citizenship.

In your complaint, you take the view that it is within the competence of the EU to act on the matter and to assist individuals with dual citizenship in renouncing one of their nationalities. 

After a careful analysis of all the information you have sent us, we do not find any indication of maladministration in how the Commission replied to your email.^[1]

We find that the Commission has provided you with a reasonable and informative reply to the matter that you raised. On the basis of the above, we have closed the case.^[2]
