Emily O'Reily je prevzela funkcijo evropske varuhinje človekovih pravic 1. oktobra 2013.

Je nekdanja nacionalna varuhinja človekovih pravic na Irskem  in nacionalna informacijska pooblaščenka Irske (2003-2013) ter nagrajena politična urednica, voditeljica in avtorica.
