How the European Investment Bank (EIB) weighed the environmental impact assessments of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline and the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline before financing the projects

The complainants were concerned how the European Investment Bank (EIB) assessed the environmental and climate change impact of two gas pipeline projects - the Trans Adriatic Pipeline and Trans-Anatolian Pipeline - before deciding to grant them funding. The complainants raised with the EIB's Complaints Mechanism (EIB-CM) their concerns about irregularities in how the impact assessments were conducted, but were dissatisfied with how the EIB-CM dealt with these concerns.

The Ombudsman considered that the EIB provided reasonable and helpful explanations regarding how it taken into account the environmental impact assessments. The Ombudsman found that the EIB had taken appropriate action to ensure that the environmental impact of the two pipelines was properly assessed. The Ombudsman closed the inquiry, finding no maladministration by the EIB.
