Emily O'Reilly pradėjo eiti Europos ombudsmenės pareigas 2013 m. spalio 1 dieną.

Ji yra dirbusi Airijos nacionaline ombudsmene bei nacionaline informacijos komisare (2003-2013) ir yra pelniusi politikos redaktorės, transliuotojos ir autorės apdovanojimus.
