Transcript of this video
This video is a recording of the digital conference to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Office of the European Ombudsman. Emily O’Reilly, the European Ombudsman, opens the conference and European Commission Vice-President, Maroš Šefčovič, in charge of inter-institutional relations and foresight, gives a keynote speech.
The panel of speakers discusses the role of the Ombudsman, how it monitors transparency and ethical standards in the EU administration, and possible future challenges. The debate is chaired by Shada Islam and the speakers are Dolors Montserrat, Chair of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee; Peter Tyndall, President of the International Ombudsman Institute; Michiel Van Hulten, Director of Transparency International EU; and Alberto Alemanno, Professor of Law and Public Policy at HEC Paris.
The conference includes a poll for participants on what they considered to be the major transparency challenge for the EU administration. Almost a third of respondents chose the ‘blame Brussels’ culture. The panelists took questions from the audience and discussed issues such as access to documents, the European Ombudsman’s powers and the importance of supporting national ombudsmen.
