Letter from the Ombudsman to the President of the Eurogroup
Letter - Date Thursday | 16 July 2020
Mr Paschal Donohoe
Please accept my warmest congratulations on your election as President of the Eurogroup. I wish you every success in guiding the Eurogroup during these unprecedented times.
Since 2016, I have been exchanging with your predecessors to foster greater Eurogroup transparency. As a result, the Eurogroup revamped its transparency policy and introduced an online repository of publicly available documents to facilitate public access to information. I have been very much encouraged by the progress made.
As you know, tackling the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic requires high levels of trust in public authorities. Given the Eurogroup’s essential role in shaping the EU’s economic response to the crisis, even greater transparency will be critical. You might already be considering improvements to ensure timely access to information, especially following the issues that have been encountered during the crisis with the online debriefings that take place immediately after Eurogroup meetings.
I look forward to continued good cooperation with the Eurogroup and with you as its President and extend to you my best wishes.
