How the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) complies with its fundamental rights obligations
Case OI/4/2021/MHZ - Opened on Thursday | 04 March 2021
The Ombudsman has opened an own-initiative inquiry to look into how the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) complies with its fundamental rights obligations and ensures accountability in relation to its new enhanced responsibilities. The inquiry will seek to clarify matters relating to the accountability of Frontex 'joint operations', activities related to 'returns' of migrants and to migration support in screening at the EU's external borders.
As a first step, the Ombudsman sent a series of questions to Frontex. The Ombudsman has received Frontex's reply, and is considering the next steps in the inquiry.
