The Ombudsman's Team

The Ombudsman's Team

To ensure that the institution can properly carry out the twin tasks of dealing with complaints in all 23 Treaty languages and of raising awareness about the right to complain, the Ombudsman has a well-qualified, multilingual staff. This section contains a full list of staff members and their job titles.

European Ombudsman

Cabinet of the European Ombudsman

The Cabinet works under the direct instruction of the Ombudsman. It advises and assists the Ombudsman to help ensure implementation of her vision, strategy and objectives.

All cabinet members may accompany the Ombudsman on missions as requested, and may help draft speeches, presentations or reports as assigned.

    Overall responsibility for the Ombudsman strategy, interinstitutional relations including European Parliament and cabinet management. Works with the Secretariat-General in ensuring implementation of the strategy. Advises the Ombudsman on communication and outreach activities.

    Responsible for organising the Ombudsman’s agenda, missions and meetings; handles all incoming Ombudsman correspondence and invitations; manages the Cabinet’s digital archive; maintains the Ombudsman’s intranet section. Responsible for ad-hoc administrative tasks as assigned.

Secretariat-General

The Secretariat-General is responsible for the overall management of the office and for ensuring overall coordination and implementation of the Ombudsman's strategy.

Communication Unit

The Communication Unit is responsible for informing the general public, key target audiences, and other stakeholders about the Ombudsman's inquiries, her leadership on transparency, accountability, and integrity, and her engagement in relevant EU debates and policy developments. The Unit is also responsible for strategic communication advice within the office as well as the coordination of the European Network of Ombudsmen.

Unit 1 - Inquiries and ICT

The main mission of Inquiries Unit 1 is to carry out inquiries into possible instances of maladministration with the aim of finding solutions in line with the strategic objectives and priorities set out by the Ombudsman.
Unit 1 also provides the lynchpin securing the smooth running of the entire office through ICT support and solutions, deals with the legal aspects of the Ombudsman's cooperation with the ENO and explores possibilities for synergies with the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights in areas of common interest.

Unit 5 - Process Management and Inquiries

The mission of Inquiries Unit 5 is to deal with complaints and carry out inquiries into possible instances of maladministration with the aim of finding solutions in line with the strategic objectives and priorities set out by the Ombudsman.
In relation to process and registration, Unit 5 contributes to the effectiveness of the Office through its functional management and shared use of the Case Management System and the Office's non-specialised record keeping tools. The Unit moreover contributes to the efficient handling of freedom of information requests addressed to the Office, and in doing so fulfils the dual purpose (a) of providing a gold standard service to external information users and (b) of helping the Office to maintain consistency in its internal practices with its external assessments of FOI matters.

Strategic Inquiries Unit

The mission of the Strategic Inquiries Unit is to promote systemic improvements in the EU administration, primarily by carrying out and supervising own-initiative inquiries and engaging with the institutions, bodies, offices and agencies in line with the objectives set out in the Ombudsman's Towards 2019 Strategy and the priorities identified in the Annual Management Plan.

Personnel, Administration, and Budget Unit

The Personnel, Administration, and Budget Unit is responsible for all administrative matters related to the institution's buildings and equipment, personnel, budget and finances. Its mission is to assist the Ombudsman by providing the institution with high-level staff, ensuring excellent working conditions and the highest standards of efficiency and integrity in the use of public funds.
