In response to allegations of corruption by current and former members of the European Parliament, the Parliament's President set out draft proposals to improve the oversight and enforcement of the Parliament’s ethics rules. Following this, the European Ombudsman wrote to the Parliament's president, welcoming her initiative and sharing some observations on how to further improve the Parliaments ethics and transparency framework.

After the Parliament subsequently set out more detailed proposals for reform, the Ombudsman identified additional areas that might benefit from greater clarity or be further explained, and sent a set of questions to the Parliament's President with a view to clarifying this.

On 20 April 2023, Parliament President Metsola replied to the Ombudsman's questions.
