Procedure
Vacancies for permanent posts in the Secretariat of the European Ombudsman are filled through internal transfer or promotion, transfer or secondment of officials from other Community institutions or bodies, or recruitment from reserve lists set up following open competitions organised by the European Communities Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) or by an EU institution or body.
Vacancies for temporary posts are primarily filled after consultation of the lists created in certain specialised fields by EPSO or by an EU institution or body with an eye to providing the European institutions with staff engaged under contracts. Posts which could not be filled from a list made available by EPSO are advertised by the Office of the European Ombudsman on his website. The Ombudsman also normally informs other Community institutions of such vacancies.
Persons interested in working for the European Ombudsman's Office should regularly consult EPSO's website where they will find all the necessary information concerning future selection procedures.
Candidates who have succeeded in one or more selection procedures and who are particularly interested in working for the European Ombudsman's Office are welcome to manifest their interest by sending the reference of the selection procedure to the Ombudsman's Personnel, Administration, and Budget Unit.

Case Handler
The Case Handler in the Ombudsman's Office must necessarily have a very good command of the English language. The documents concerning the notice of vacancy are therefore only available in English.

The European Communities Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) - The European Communities Personnel Selection Office (EPSO) was established on 26 July 2002. Its mission is to organise open competitions to select highly qualified staff for recruitment to all institutions of the European Union, namely the European Parliament, the Council, the European Commission, the Court of Justice, the Court of Auditors, the Economic and Social Committee the Committee of the Regions and the European Ombudsman. EPSO became fully operational on 1 January 2003.
Traineeships
Rules
The Ombudsman offers traineeships, twice a year, primarily to university law graduates. The traineeships take place either in Strasbourg or in Brussels according to the needs of the Office. They start on 1 September and 1 January each year.
Trainees in the Ombudsman's Office must necessarily have a very good command of the English language. Applications must therefore be submitted in English. For the same reasons, the documents concerning traineeship applications are only available in English.
Java-web developer trainee for 2017
Each year, the European Ombudsman offers the opportunity to a java-web developer trainee to assist in the development of the Ombudsman's Internet and Extranet websites.
Estimated starting date: January/February 2017.
