Seuraavassa historiallisten asiakirjojen luettelossa on viittauksia EU:n toimielinten laatimiin asiakirjoihin, ja nämä viittaukset eivät välttämättä ole tuttuja kaikille lukijoille.

KOM-asiakirjat: (esim. KOM (2004) 519 lopull.). Näitä käytetään lainsäädännön valmisteluteksteinä ja ehdotuksina sekä mietintöinä ja komission tiedonantoina muille toimielimille. Ne ovat saatavilla Euroopan unionin virallisessa lehdessä ja Eur-Lex-järjestelmässä (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/fi/index.htm).

SEC-asiakirjat: (esim. SEC (93) 539 lopull.) Nämä ovat Euroopan komission julkaisemattomia asiakirjoja. Asiakirjat luokitellaan SEC-asiakirjoiksi, jos ne eivät kuulu mihinkään muuhun sarjaan.

PE-numeroidut, A-numeroidut ja B-numeroidut asiakirjat: PE-numeroidut asiakirjat ovat Euroopan parlamentin asiakirjoja (esim. PE 318.504/DEF). PE-numero säilyy samana koko käsittely- ja hyväksymisprosessin ajan. A-numerot (esim. A5-0271/2002) annetaan Euroopan parlamentin valiokuntien hyväksymille mietinnöille. Molempiin luokkiin kuuluvat asiakirjat ovat saatavana Euroopan parlamentin verkkosivustolla (http://www.europarl.europa.eu). B-numerot (esim. B2-863/86) annetaan asiakirjoille, joista parlamentti keskustelee ja jotka se hyväksyy täysistunnossaan.

SN-asiakirjat: Nämä ovat Euroopan unionin neuvoston julkaisemattomia asiakirjoja (esim. SN 3940/90).

SI-asiakirjat: Nämä ovat Euroopan komission pääsihteeristön laatimia, julkaisemattomia asiakirjoja, jotka koskevat neuvoston työtä esimerkiksi hallitustenvälisiin konferensseihin liittyen (esim. SI (90) 751).
